More about Sports Medicine

A Sport and Exercise Physician is a medical specialist with advanced training in the diagnosis and management of muscle, bone, joint and exercise-related conditions. They help patients of all ages and activity levels, from children and adolescents with growth-related sporting injuries, through to weekend athletes, active adults, older patients wanting to stay strong, and high-level athletes competing at national or international level.

Sport and Exercise Physicians commonly manage injuries and conditions such as knee pain, meniscus injuries, patellofemoral pain, osteoarthritis, shoulder pain, rotator cuff problems, bursitis, tendon injuries, Achilles and patellar tendinopathy, tennis elbow, hip and groin pain, muscle strains, neck and low back pain, arthritis in active people, and post-surgical rehabilitation. They also assess adolescent athlete back pain, including pars stress fractures, and provide concussion assessment, guidance and return-to-play planning.
An appointment involves a detailed medical and injury history, assessment of movement, strength and function, and review of any previous imaging or investigations. The aim is to understand not only the injury itself, but also the patient’s activity goals, whether that is returning to school sport, swimming, cycling, gym training, running, work duties, bone-strengthening exercise, or simply moving with less pain and more confidence.

Management may include a clear diagnosis, education, rehabilitation planning, exercise guidance, referral for imaging where needed, coordination with physiotherapists, exercise physiologists and GPs, and advice about safe return to activity. Where appropriate, Sport and Exercise Physicians may also provide procedures such as ultrasound-guided injections, corticosteroid injections, hyaluronic acid injections or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections as part of a broader treatment and rehabilitation plan.
